He completed his medical degree and training in Tulsa at the  Oklahoma State University College of Osteopathic Medicine and the Oklahoma State University Medical Center. 

Dr. Cunningham was one of the first physicians in the nation to perform "no-stitch" image guided ablation surgery for varicose vein disease.  He has extensive experience treating vein problems using minimally invasive techniques and has personally performed over 12,000 procedures for varicose veins and other vein disorders including radiofrequency VNUS Closure vein surgery with both the traditonal ClosurePLUS and the more advanced ClosureFAST systems, endovenous laser vein surgery, microincisional vein surgery, image guided vein ligation, cutaneous laser surgery and sclerotherapy for telangiectasia ("spider veins"), venous duplex and ultrasound vein mapping, traditional varicose vein sclerotherapy, ultrasound guided sclerotherapy, and foam vein sclerotherapy.  He also has experience with special medical and cosmetic vein problems such as varicose veins of the sole of the foot , venous lakes of the lips, vascular birthmarks, angiomas, face veins, hand veins, breast veins, vaginal veins, and other veins. 

Dr. Cunningham specializes in Phlebology, which is the diagnosis and treatment of vein disease emphasizing minimally invasive surgical and non-surgical methods. Dr. Cunningham was accepted as a member of the American College of Phlebology in 1991 and is a member of the general specialty College plus the Phlebological Surgery and Ultrasound sections of the College. As part of his practice of Phlebology, Dr. Cunningham also specializes in Sclerotherapy, which is the diagnosis and treatment of vein disease and other medical conditions which can benefit from therapeutic sclerosis induced by injection, laser, radiofrequency, and other techniques. Dr. Cunningham is one of a small number of physicians in the nation Board Certified in Sclerotherapy.   He is also a member of the American Society for Laser Medicine & Surgery and the American College of Osteopathic Sclerotherapeutic Pain Management.
